

I know a lot of this will probably be speculation. Before that, I set my BIOS to default settings. Luckily, I have been able to boot up my PC after moving the two sticks of RAM into slots 3 and 4 until I order a new motherboard. It was fresh Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste. My thought was, it's probably all on the Heatsink, but that was not the case. Could this have shorted the motherboard? Is this a design flaw by Noctua?ĩ) One thing I noticed after removing the Noctua heatsink was that the thermal paste on the CPU seemed to have dissipated. I never force it.Ħ) I have read that some Heatsinks with the combination of mounting kit and screw can cause the motherboard to become "un-grounded?"ħ) Another thing I noticed is that the mounting bracket that attaches behind the motherboard seemed to be almost touching the back of the motherboard. Can a new heatsink like the Noctua cause the bending of pins due to strong clamp force? Again, I made sure to stop turning the screw as soon as it tightened up. I make sure to screw just enough without over-tightening.ĥ) One thing I did notice that was different, or I may have not caught it the last time I reseated my CPU was a bent PIN. I have recently reapplied thermal paste with the Hyper 212 EVO and I had no issues. No funny business of thermal paste oozing out into CPU socket.Ĥ) I did carefully seat the CPU like I always do. I guess there's a first! I'm on hardwood floor, I am sure to touch an object to ground myself all the time.ģ) Thermal paste and everything else looks good on the CPU. Both sticks work, but only in slots 3 and 4.Ģ) What would cause swapping out a Heatsink to damage the motherboard? Did I short something? In the 15 years of building PCs, I have never shorted a PC.

The Corsair RAM seems to be in working order.

I swapped around the Corsair Vengeance (2x8GB) RAM in different slots, testing them by using a single stick of RAM. Until I decided to swap out my Hyper 212 EVO with a Noctua NH-U12S.ġ) RAM slots 1 and 2 died. I have a two-year old PC and everything was working perfectly with no signs of degradation or bluescreens indicating something wrong with my PC.
